On Susan Boyle...

Okay, a little introduction who the people who live in a bunker: Susan Boyle is a contestant on "Britain got talent" IV show, who being 47 years old, can not be called "attractive" by most people's standards. After her appearance on the show she became a huge phenomenon, a "thing you totally must see" on youtube, and basically an ugly-betty-like celebrity. This is the video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxPZh4AnWyk

*Warning: Profanities Ahead*

Now, you know I don't write much here usually. It's just this show got me shocked to the extreme. Not by the woman's voice, not even by her appearance. By the fact, that MILLIONS of people still find it SURPRISING, that an unattractive person can have talent. It's not like this is unprecedented: one of the british most talented performers, Amy Winehouse, looks like a pissin crack whore. And even in America, one of the most important people in the country, Abraham Lincoln, looks like a miscarried monkey. Why, even after all those "blond" and "supermodel" jokes, most people still, almost INSTINCTIVELY assume that unattractive people must be stupid and wretched? You can speak about "primal instincts" and "social pressure" and all that stuff, but I can't stop thinking that the real reason behind this superficial phenomenon is that everybody is fucking dumb like fucking clay brick.

Empire: Total War is a GRAND game. The sheer scope of it is hard to describe.

As my brave soldiers battle their way against Ottoman turks all over Balkans, my feeble fleet has to protect my only naval access to the mediteranean - the Crimean peninsula. At the same time nobles in Saint Petersburg are unhappy about the increased taxation to fund war effort. Sweden in the north is rebuilding after a recent war, no doubt they will want to strike back and cut me out of Baltic sea, closing some of my most important trade routs. Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth is wary of my seemingly expansionist behaviour, so I have to play diplomacy to keep them happy and keep our alliance intact. Meanwhile I also have to pick a right person to replace my recently-deceased Minister of Justice and quell the religious unrests in a recently conquered Dagestan.

Empire: Total War is a GRAND game.

A few days ago I talked about Amy Winehouse. I've been seing her appear in tabloids time to time, dismissing all the bad stuff as usual celebrity gossip. Unfortunately, her situation really seems to be pretty bad, she is drugging herself to death and might not last to make another album. It just seems like being f-ed up and being an artist go hand to hand. It made me wonder about the causality.

It seems like it's not being an artist that makes you a screw-up. It's true, fame can do that to people, but not all artists are famous (at least during their lifetimes) and definitely not all celebrities are half-decent artists. I think it's just that art is really an emotion expressed, and emotional people naturally tend towards expression, be it through writing, poetry, music or painting. But the same people also tend to act through emotion a lot, and emotion is most often contradictory to reason. They do stuff no reasonable person would ever do and that takes heavy toll on their lives.

Amy Winehouse is a friggen discovery for me. Despite her ... STRANGE looks and ... EXTREME image, her music is really really good. The voice sounds annoying at first, but after you let it sink in, you see how it completes the misc to the point where you know it couldn't possibly work in any other way.

<lj-embed id="15" />

Watching fractal art at 3.15 am while listening to Fleur is an out-of-this-world experience. It's like getting high of experiences rather than substances. You overload your sensory inputs with seemingly unconnected signals, each beautiful on it's own - and your exhausted brain adds them all up to something that is definitely more than just the summ of it's parts.

I reviewed a paper today, some guys had successfully grown a complete tooth out of dental pulp cell culture by seeding it onto a biodegradable scaffold and implanting the scaffold into a rat's belly.
